Studying at university while you are still in school and getting the chance to try out the subject of your choice? You can do that!

Our pre-university program is open to all talented and motivated students in upper-level secondary school (Gymnasium). As a student in a pre-university program at JGU, you will attend regular lectures during the lecture period in addition to your school classes. This gives you the opportunity to check out what you want to study or gain a better orientation, get to know a specific subject and student life, and possibly even earn course certificates that will be recognized in your regular studies in Rhineland-Palatinate later on.

The pre-university program is available for all subjects at JGU. In degree programs with restricted admission, however, you can only attend classes with enough free spots; these are usually lectures.

For degree programs in the arts (such as art and music), you must also pass an aptitude test to be able to attend classes. As part of your application to the pre-university program, you will discuss what classes you will be attending with representatives from the subject in question ahead of time. We make sure that these are classes that do not require any previous in-depth knowledge.Usually they are introductory classes from the first semesters.

Are you an upper-level secondary school (Gymnasium) student in or around Mainz interested in a pre-university program? You can participate if you can provide proof of the following.

  • Motivation & talent:
You should have above-average grades in school, especially in school subjects related to the program of study. You should also have fun learning and be motivated to invest extra time in your studies alongside school.
  • A positive recommendation from your school:
You will need a written recommendation from your school with the school director attesting to your particular aptitude and approving your plan to participate, as well as confirming that arrangements have been made for your absence from classes.
  • A positive decision by the faculty of the desired subject at JGU:
The pre-university program representatives from the relevant faculty will make the decision on your participation after a personal interview with you.
  • Consent
from your legal guardian, if you are still a minor
  • Where applicable, passing an aptitude test
in degree programs in the arts (music, art)

Costs:
The pre-university program at JGU is free of charge. However, as a student in the pre-university program you can voluntarily pay the semester fee to acquire a semester ticket. This ticket gives you unlimited use of local public transportation in the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and Rhein-Nahe-Verkehrsverbund (RNN).

Interested in another semester?

You will initially only be admitted to JGU for one semester, but you can continue studying in the pre-university program.

Have another meeting with the subject representatives and arrange the classes for your second semester.

Next, submit your application for re-registration (in German) to Student Services no later than two weeks before the beginning of the lecture period and include a copy of your most recent school certificate. As long as your school does not object, you can now continue studying in the pre-university program.

Of course, you can also continue studying in the pre-university program in a different subject.

Transitioning to regular studies

Did you find the subject you wish to study by participating in the pre-university program? That’s great! Now you can apply for a regular spot at the university after completing school. If you are offered a spot, you can have your achievements and classes from the pre-university program recognized, possibly shortening your time at university.
